Unusual hand wrought baking iron. Used to hold a cooking pot, and then pushed among the embers and thus used as a small oven to cook breads and cakes. A nearly identical example is pictured in Iron and Brass Implements of the English House, by J. Seymour Lindsay (plate 72), published in 1927. Excellent old surface. Wonderful construction with great lines to this rarely seen form. A nice large imposing piece of centuries’ old wrought iron.
